This is your Captain speaking 📣
You may have seen the new name and logo in this email. Well, we have a big announcement to make…
Tech Path has rebranded to Intern Ship 🚢🌊
If you’ve been an old fan of ours, don’t worry, we’ll still be featuring mentors from tech companies and sharing our favorite career resources.
What’s new is that we’ll be hosting in-person events for you to connect and build friendships with other interns in fun, relaxed environments.
In today’s post-pandemic world, many, especially Gen Z, feel disconnected. The Intern Ship addresses this by offering opportunities to connect in real life, retreat from the daily grind and enjoy activities like mixers and exploring local communities.
Come join our first Intern Ship event this Friday in San Francisco! See below for more deets!

CAPTAIN’S LOG 🚢
🧭 Navigating a Sea of Social Events

When you go to IRL events where there's networking you always want to make sure you wear ear buds to make sure nobody approaches you.
YEA YOU HEARD ME.
Ok honestly, that's just me at busy airports with my headphones on. So let's try to be better than Manny at the airport.
Airport Manny is no fun.
There's nothing more obvious than wearing headphones in a busy place that signals to people, don't bother me.
So take off the headphones and listen up for a sec.
IRL events like the one I'm hosting this week is a great opportunity to make friends in a fun and relaxed environment outside of work. In order to do that you sometimes have to be the person to start a conversation.
Here are practical conversation starters and tips to help you make new friends:
When does your internship end?
How’s your internship going?
Is this your first internship season?
Have you heard back yet about a return offer?
Having a wing person or people helps open up conversation
Compliments go a long way (hey I love your outfit, shoes, glasses)
Pro Tip: Just show up as yourself. If you're shy, be shy. If you're outgoing, be outgoing. If you're somewhere in between then take breaks and be mindful of your social battery when it starts to get low.
For those who are more confident in their ability to socialize, and bring people together, I encourage you to be one of our social catalysts. Use your powers for good and spark conversations. If you see someone by themselves, check on them. It may open a great conversation ♥️
That's it! It's not rocket science. You don't need to come prepared with goals, or an elevator pitch. Leave the conference vibes at the conferences.
Remember, these events are about enjoying yourself and having a good time. Get away from work, build memories, make friends, and create experiences that will last a lifetime.
BONUS POINTS: If you can work the word flabbergasted in a sentence while having a conversation at the event this Friday 😛
TECH MENTOR
💫 Meet Your Mentor: Grace Gong

Name: Grace Gong
Career Level: Internship
University: Western University
Major: Computer Science
Job Title: PM Intern @ Microsoft
OPTIMIZED MENTORSHIP
💎 Mentor Advice from Grace 💎

How to get exposure to mentorship opportunities: Grace found mentors through her work experiences and coffee chats. One of the easiest ways to find a mentor is through your company or college's mentorship programs.
Find mentors without mentorship programs. You don’t need a formal program to receive mentorship, learning from your peers and coworkers can also be a form of mentorship.
Spread kindness. If you've received help or mentorship in the past, it’s good to continue the cycle and mentor others when you can.

How to deal with imposter syndrome
(By Jean Kang)
Imposter syndrome is a silent killer.
3 tips to beat your imposter syndrome (and change your life)
—
#1 Go from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset
You might be telling yourself:
- “I’m not good enough”
- “I always do X.”
- “I’m too quiet.”
These are examples of negative self-talk (not rooted in facts).
—
#2 Get Uncomfortable
If you want to improve, you have to do the hard things.
Examples:
- Want to be a better public speaker? Go give a presentation.
- Want to be a program manager? Run various projects in your job.
- Want to be a content creator? Start posting three days a week.
