CAPTAIN’S LOG 🚢

Captain’s Log – Stardate 2025.06.20

Ahoy, Crew!

May was a little different for Intern Ship: instead of our usual in-person events, we hosted a virtual session that went viral on LinkedIn. Nine incredible LinkedIn influencers, including (Jia) Audrey Chen, Aimen Moten, and Taylor Falls, shared advice for students who didn't land internships this summer. The tips and encouragement were invaluable, reminding us that no matter the format, human connection matters.

Recently, we saw a post by Andrew Yeung referencing Mark Cuban’s prediction that "in a world increasingly dominated by AI, human connection will become even more valuable." We feel this in our bones.

As AI transforms our lives, what remains uniquely human is the need for face-to-face connection. That’s where IRL communities like Intern Ship shine. For students, interns, and young professionals, genuine connection isn’t just helpful—it’s essential. We’re dedicated to creating spaces that make meeting people fun, easy, and meaningful. Less awkward. More fun. Always intentional.

And now—summer is here with an exciting lineup of events! We can’t wait to gather across cities like Seattle, New York and Toronto this summer. Every Intern Ship event is a chance to grow your network, career, and sense of belonging.

Here’s to a summer full of IRL magic!

— Manny, Captain of the Intern Ship 🚢

3 Networking Hacks That Actually Work — and Why Intern Ship Is Built on Them

In a world flooded with “networking advice,” here are 3 proven strategies that helped one young professional land 8 internships and job offers — and they’re exactly the kinds of moves we champion at Intern Ship:

1️⃣ Cold Outreach Done Right

Don’t wait for opportunities to land in your inbox. Instead:

  • Introduce yourself as who you want to be.

  • Keep messages short — busy people skim.

  • Always include a clear call-to-action that creates a win-win.

📬 Translation for Intern Ship members: Don't be shy. That DM, email, or LinkedIn message you send might be the one that unlocks your next opportunity. Be intentional and respectful — your message may spark a life-changing conversation.

2️⃣ Ditch the School Career Fair. Go Where The Actual People Are.

Most school career fairs are filled with other students just like you — not decision makers. The real magic happens at specialized events where:

  • Hiring managers, founders, and key people are actually present.

  • You can meet them at panels, fireside chats, hackathons, and mixers.

  • Apps like Luma or Meetup are great for finding these.

🎯 This is literally what Intern Ship is designed for. Our events aren’t your typical job fair tables and booths. We host fun, low pressure mixers, intimate fireside chats, and collaborative experiences where you meet real people — the kind of people who can actually hire you, mentor you, or introduce you to your next big opportunity.

3️⃣ Be a “Go-Giver”

The fastest way to grow your network? Give first.

Intern Ship’s Summer Tour Is Heating Up 😎+ the Evolving Summer Guide

The Intern Ship Summer Tour has officially set sail — and we're docking in new ports this season! 🌊🛳

We’re taking our IRL adventures beyond the Bay, with upcoming stops in Toronto, Seattle, and New York. Each city brings new faces, new conversations, and more of the bright young minds that make Intern Ship special. If you're nearby, come hang out — or send a friend our way. We love when our crew grows.

And while the ship travels, the Intern Ship Summer Guide back home in the Bay keeps growing too. We originally dropped it as a fun little summer booklet of Bay Area events, but honestly? We keep finding cool stuff to add. So the Guide is officially a living document — we’ll keep updating it throughout the summer whenever we stumble upon something fun.

The Death of Resumes? What You Need to Know

Resumes aren't dead yet, but they're definitely on life support. A recent article written by George J. Ziogas and published in Psychology of Workplaces breaks down how hiring is evolving—and why today's students need to think beyond the resume.

What's Happening:

Resumes are becoming less central. Employers see them as too limited to capture a candidate’s full story. Instead, companies are:

  • Using AI-powered Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that screen resumes based on keywords.

  • Incorporating video resumes and asynchronous video interviews to assess communication skills, personality, and cultural fit.

  • Heavily evaluating your online presence: LinkedIn profiles, personal websites, portfolios, and even social media activity.

The Debate: Pros & Cons

Potential Positives:

  • You can showcase who you are beyond your job titles.

  • Videos give you a chance to demonstrate soft skills and thought process.

  • Online portfolios provide proof of your work and skills.

  • Employers gain a fuller picture of candidates early on.

⛔ Potential Concerns:

  • Risks of bias: age, appearance, neurodivergence, and cultural differences may impact video perceptions.

  • Video formats can be intimidating, especially for students uncomfortable in front of the camera.

  • Some feel online presence checks are invasive—your social life might feel unfairly scrutinized.

  • Growing concern that AI-enhanced, polished videos may escalate competition and create new inequalities.

Actionable Advice: How YOU Can Prepare

The shift is happening. Here’s how to get ahead:

WELLNESS MATTERS 💮

The 3 MPH Brain Hack

Feeling stuck? Overthinking? Next time you're spiraling, don’t sit with it — walk with it.

Science keeps confirming what our ancestors already knew: your brain was literally built to solve problems while you’re moving. Whether it's a tough convo with your boss, an awkward moment with a friend, or just that ugh foggy feeling — 15 minutes of walking can flip the switch.

Why walking works:

  • Naturally resets your stress response (bye, cortisol)

  • Clears mental fog & overthinking loops

  • Boosts your mood-regulating chemicals

  • Activates your problem-solving brain (hello, creativity)

  • Bonus support? Omega-3s, alpha-GPC, and curcumin can give your brain extra love.

🫡Intern Ship Captain’s Orders: When your brain freezes, hit the dock. Movement is the original reboot.

SOMETHING FOR FUNSIES💀

How I talk to ChatGPT vs. How I talk to Siri

Guess who’s my favourite!! 👀😂 #ChatGPT #Siri #Gemini #AI #Sabrina #SabrinaCarpenter #PleasePleasePlease #ManChild #Funny #Comedy #fyp

SOMETHING FOR THE SOUL🎶

Human Made Lo-Fi | Chill Nature, Sleepy Dog & Slow Beats (No AI)

This month’s soul-soother is a lofi video made by a human—not AI.

That small detail feels important right now.

It’s a reminder that human hands and hearts are still behind some of the most beautiful things on the internet.
